How it plays

Draw a card. Make a bad decision.

Every player controls a Region of the map. Your job is to keep it standing while everyone else's collapses. The deck gives you four ways to misbehave.

1

Stack the Chaos

Chaos cards pile onto Regions: tornadoes, locust swarms, nuclear meltdowns, government shutdowns. When a Region hits its Chaos limit, it collapses for good. Florida folds at 3. Texas doesn't fold until 5.

Chaos card: Tornado, playable on Texas, Central and South
2

Meddle relentlessly

Action cards block a play, skip a rival's turn, or drag the whole map around. Impeachment, Space Laser, Presidential Pardon, A Day at the DMV: all perfectly legal moves here.

Action card: Space Laser, blocks any action card played
3

Hold the Swamp, if you dare

The Swamp is not a Region and wins you nothing, but the powers are real. It can also be stolen at any moment. Holding it makes you strong and popular in the worst possible way.

The Swamp tile: not a Region, all trouble
4

Come back from the grave

Lose every Region and you're Displaced, not eliminated: still drawing, still scheming, still able to claw a Region back. Get declared Unfit for Service and only another player's 25th Amendment Appeal can save you. Hope you were kind on the way up.

The map

Twelve Regions. One survivor.

Every Region gets a lovingly unflattering portrait and a Chaos limit. Some fold fast. Some refuse to die. Alaska and Hawaii only show up in 7–8 player games, and every Chaos card sticks to them.

Find out which Region you are

The Region quiz

Which Region are you?

Six questions, zero mercy. Your result comes with the official card and the roast you deserve.

Ready to be judged?

Takes about a minute. Longer if you argue with the result. You will.

The origin story

Four friends, one New Year's weekend

Mer'ca was born at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon: a historic hotel that started life as a county poor farm. Make of that irony what you will. The first playable prototype took about two days. People wandering past the table kept asking "what is that" and "where can I buy one".

Then came months of playing it into shape: rules rewritten, mechanics killed for not earning their spot, arguments settled the only honest way, by playing another game. Same four friends today, plus one late addition and a host of helpers, and considerably more cards.

"The country may be a mess. Game night doesn't have to be."
  • The rules have been rewritten more times than most Regions have collapsed.
  • California and Texas are the hardest Regions to take down. Florida and the Southwest fold early. Nobody is surprised.
  • The satire is broad on purpose: no party, no Region, no type of American walks away un-roasted.

Nobody has to agree. Everybody has to draw.

A game for people who'd never vote the same way but will happily ruin each other's Regions at the same table. Coming soon to Kickstarter.
